BALLARAT TRADES HALL YOUNG ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR:

BRENTON SMITH

The UFU is proud to announce that Ballarat City Fire Station Shop Steward Brenton Smith was awarded the Ballarat Trades Hall Young Activist of the Year Award 2017.  The Award was presented to Brenton at the Ballarat Labour Day Dinner while his family, many of his colleagues and UFU Officials watched on.

Brenton has worked tirelessly as the shop steward for Ballarat City for the benefit of the UFU and its members for more than four years, and many members will know Brenton for the work he has done in this role.  He also contributes to the improvement and monitoring of working conditions via his involvement as a UFU representative on Consultative Committees and Working Parties.

It has been Brenton’s dedication and approach to his role that led to his colleagues nominating him for the award and in true style, Brenton was humbled and surprised by the nomination.  UFU Officials, BCOM and staff are pleased to have supported this nomination and to now congratulate Brenton on his win.

The success of the UFU is in large part due to the work of individuals such as Brenton, who go above and beyond for the benefit of firefighters both present and future, in their union roles. Thanks must also go to Brenton’s family who offer him the support to undertake his union role, and afford him the time he needs to do so. The importance of the Shop Steward role cannot be understated and this award is in small part a reflection of that importance – Strength in Unity.
