ANDREWS GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW INTO

FIRE SERVICES

Today the Minister for Emergency Services the Hon Jane Garrett announced a Government Review into Victoria’s fire services.

A copy of the Minister’s release is included below.

The UFU Victorian Branch Committee of Management welcomes the announcement and looks forward to participating in a cooperative and constructive manner to ensure that the environment of which MFB and CFA firefighters had to endure under the Napthine Government is exposed, examined in the Review.

In this context the BCOM have authorised a dedicated resource team for developing the UFU and members response to the review at the UFU office consisting of Industrial Officer Rini Krouskos and Davies Lawyers Solicitor Tonia Sakkas.   Additionally Senior Counsel has been briefed given the importance of this matter.

Membership involvement is vitally important to highlight your experiences in relation to attacks under the Napthine Government in relation to staffing, equipment and interoperability (secondment programme).

The UFU understands fully the stress that was placed on firefighters and fire service personnel in both the CFA and MFB.  In addition to those experiences we look forward to positive submissions as to how to rectify the deficiencies caused by the budget cuts whilst improving the service to the community of which we serve.

If you wish to participate please contact UFU Industrial Officer Rini Krouskos by email  to io3@ufuvic.asn.au

MINISTER GARRETT’S MEDIA RELEASE:

Review To Ensure Victoria Remains Leader In Fire Services

Wednesday 29 July 2015

The Andrews Labor Government has launched a comprehensive review into the MFB and CFA to ensure the state maintains its world-class fire services.

Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett said the Fire Services Review (FSR) will examine and make recommendations on the resourcing, operations, management and culture of the organisations.

It will look at ways to better support our firefighters to keep the community safe. The review is a key part of ensuring Victoria remains a world leader in emergency management.

Ms Garrett has appointed David O’Byrne, a former Tasmanian Minister for Police and Emergency Services, to conduct the review.

Mr O’Byrne has extensive expertise in government, public service and community organisations.

Ms Garrett said Victoria is well served by our outstanding firefighters and the review will place the MFB and CFA in the best possible position for the future.

The review will be completed by the start of the summer fire season.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett

“We’re making sure Victoria has the best fire services. That means giving our outstanding firefighters the support they need to protect our communities from challenging emergencies into the future.”
