FIREFIGHTERS FIGHT FIRES NOT PEOPLE
Members are informed that it has been a long held policy of the United Firefighters Union of Australia that firefighters will not be deployed or participate in removing protesters.
Firefighters are held in high regard within the community and that is predominately because of the role they perform in saving life and property. If firefighters were to perform the role of removing protesters or community groups from demonstrations it would damage our national and international reputation and standing in the community.
The standing within the community should not be damaged by ill-conceived decisions where firefighters are asked to be deployed to disperse protestors or community groups.
We are aware of one state in Australia where firefighters were utilised to remove climate change activists. This featured very heavily in media coverage and that sort of publicity goes against the very grain of the work that firefighters perform.
Other emergency services are charged with that function by legislation and we respect that that is a function that they must perform, however we reaffirm very strongly that firefighters fight fires not people.
To date we have not received a directive here in Victoria from the fire services to perform functions to remove protesters and we don’t expect that we will receive a direction. However if such a direction is given can you please contact your shop steward or delegate immediately.
Any queries in regard to this matter, please contact Peter Marshall directly on 0419 127 004.
