INVESTIGATION INTO TOTTENHAM/WEST FOOTSCRAY FACTORY FIRE
The UFU made a request to the Coroners Court of Victoria to investigate the fire at 420 Somerville Rd, Tottenham/West Footscray on 30 August 2018.
The request followed serious concerns raised about health risks to firefighters after they were exposed to dangerous chemicals and toxic smoke and concerns about public health and safety.
Among concerns is that the dumping of waste chemicals and other unwanted goods in rented factories has become the “new business model” putting firefighters and the public at risk.
We have asked the Coroner to look at whether the MFB and/or other bodies have identified sites which may be used to dump waste chemicals and unwanted goods and which co-incidentally pose a high fire risk.
The UFU has set up a working party on the Tottenham/West Footscray fire.
We have been advised that Coroner Darren Bracken has commenced a coronial investigation into the fire on the basis that it is in the public interest to investigate the fire.
