COALITION’S “ENSURING INTEGRITY” BILL DEFEATED IN AUSTRALIAN SENATE
One Nation and Jacqui Lambie Network vote against Bill in final vote
As members may be aware from the flurry of social media activity in the past few hours, the “Ensuring Integrity Bill” has been defeated in the Australian Senate.
This comes as a shock to conservative politicians and political commentators alike, with Pauline Hanson and Jacqui Lambie failing to give any hints about voting against the Bill. Both politicians attempted to put amendments to the Bill forward in recent days and weeks.
Last week, Junior Vice-President Mick Tisbury appeared in a video which highlighted the reality of union-busting laws for Australian workers, and in particular career firefighters. We encourage all members to watch this video: https://vimeo.com/376092506
In her statement explaining her reasons for ultimately voting against the Bill, Jacqui Lambie made the following comments:
I had to make a call whether to support a bill that makes out like teachers, nurses and fireys are as bad as the CFMEU. It puts the bloody Musicians’ Union of Australia in the same camp as the ETU for goodness sake! There’s no need to put everyone in the firing line.
The “Ensuring Integrity” Bill was nothing more than a union-busting bill. It was an outright attack on the right for trade unions to exist and operate to protect workers’ rights. The defeat of the Bill today sends a clear message to the Morrison Government.
