DANIEL ANDREWS ANNOUNCES GROUNDBREAKING PROJECT TO ASSIST FIREFIGHTERS SUFFERING FROM POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

The UFU has welcomed a commitment by Labor leader Daniel Andrews to provide support for firefighters with PTSD.

Daniel Andrews has announced that if elected the Labor Government will fund a $200,000 two year trial to assist Firefighters who are suffering from PTSD.

The money will fund a program at the Austin Health Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital which already houses Post Trauma Victoria and which will scale up its current operations.

Two $100,000 capped Grants to the hospital  will be provided for the provision of additional services for firefighters who have been affected by work related trauma.

The program recognises the increased occurrence of PTSD in firefighters due to the nature of the occupation and the traumatic experiences that firefighters experience.

Mr Andrews stated “We owe it to our firefighters to provide the support they need, so they can keep supporting us.”

This announcement follows last years report from Newcastle University, based on both global research and local data, which found that firefighters face significantly high levels of PTSD.
