Bulletin No: 037 Volume: 21 Tuesday 3 March 2015
To ALL UFU MEMBERS
As you would be aware by now, levels of the toxic chemical PFOS has been detected in the water facilities at Fiskville.
The UFU was contacted by the CFA yesterday afternoon to inform us of the decision to suspend operations at the Fiskville training facility until further notice.
From the UFU’s point of view the priority is the health and wellbeing of our members and as such we will be seeking to have a meeting with the CFA to gain further information.
There will be a number of matters to be considered, in particular:
1. The ongoing health monitoring and support mechanisms to alleviate the anxiety levels of employees/members;
2. There were a number of courses scheduled including promotional courses that were to occur in the near future. The UFU will be seeking to make appropriate arrangements with the CFA to facilitate those courses continuing.
The UFU Secretary Peter Marshall attended Fiskville yesterday to meet with members before the Parliamentary Inquiry commenced its inspections. There is a high level of anxiety and concern at the potential permanent closure of the Fiskville facility. That matter will be determined as a result of the Parliamentary Inquiry. In the interim it is the UFU’s priority to make sure that everything that can be done will be done in relation to health monitoring, counselling and security of employment.
A further bulletin will be disseminated in the near future after the UFU’s meeting with the CFA. If you have any questions please contact Industrial Officer Michelle Baldini at the union office on 9419 8811.
