MFB FAIL IN BID TO TERMINATE
Today the Fair Work Commission dismissed the MFB’s applications to terminate the MFB UFU Operational Staff Agreement 2010 and the MFB UFU Assistant Chief Fire Officers Agreements.
The MFB has failed in it highly expensive legal bid to wipe out firefighters terms and conditions of employment including minimum crewing. During the hearing of the case it was revealed that the MFB had plans to reduce crewing by up to 24 firefighters taking 8 trucks offline at any time. The decision to do so would be made at the start of the week taking into account forecast weather. This plan did not include any other type of risk assessment and as such was tantamount to crystal ball gazing.
The decision by the Fair Work Commission comes at a time when firefighters confidence in MFB management is at an all-time low. Recently 95% firefighters surveyed said they have no confidence in Fire Chief Peter Rau and 92% have no confidence in MFB Board President Murray Neil Comrie.
This case is a huge victory firefighters and for the safety of the Melbourne community.
The Fair Work Commission has recognised that the current EBA is legitimate until the next one is concluded. After 18 months negotiations, the Napthine Government goes into caretaker mode tonight with another job unfinished.
Members are reminded there is a Special General Meeting on the 18th November at the Collingwood Town Hall for an important announcement regarding fire services in Victoria.
