MFB TO APPEAL TERMINATION CASE
NAPTHINE GOVERNMENT CONTINUES
ATTACK ON FIREFIGHTERS
ONE WEEK OUT FROM ELECTION
Today the MFB filed a Notice of Appeal contesting Commissioner Wilson’s decision not to terminate the MFB UFU Operational Staff Agreement 2010 and the MFB UFU Assistant Chief Fire Officer 2010 Agreement.
One week out from the election, and while the Government is in caretaker mode, the MFB will be committing hundreds of thousands of dollars to continue the attack on firefighters and to renege on their own agreement.
The Napthine Government supported the MFB’s original and unsuccessful application to terminate the agreements. The MFB spent a total of $8.2 million in the last two years in legal fees.
This misuse of public funding and Fire Service Levy monies now continues with the lodging of the Appeal despite the Fair Work Commission’s 115-page decision which clearly set out it was not appropriate to terminate the agreements. The original application was a failed attempt to impose the MFB’s own bargaining wish list through securing a significant advantage of wiping out the firefighters agreements.
Members were not fooled by the Napthine-Wells Government’s announcement last week ago that if returned to power it would legislate protections for firefighters with occupational cancer.
Members well remember that the Liberal-Nationals used every trick in the Parliamentary book to stall and ultimately vote down the Greens Bill during the last term.
Now even the public may understand that in the very least that was a case of vote-buying and the Napthine Government has no genuine intention of helping firefighters or respecting that they put their quality and quantity of lives on the line to protect the community.
Today’s Appeal confirms that if the Napthine-Wells Government is not voted out in the State Election on 29 November then the war on firefighters will continue.
UFU members are out informing the early voting public to put the Liberal’s last at the pre-polling booths.
Today, the UFU launched its latest election campaign resource “Florrie the Fire Truck” which will do the rounds of the pre-polling booths in marginal seats and circle the CBD this weekend taking the message “Napthine Slashes You Burn” to the voting public.
If you want to be on the roster as part of Florrie’s team of drivers please text Dan on 0419 127 045.
The Fire Truck has been named “Florrie” in recognition of St Florian who is the protector of the protectors as the Patron Saint of firefighters.
