NAPTHINE-WELLS IGNORED ADVICE
TO RECOGNISE FIREFIGHTERS’
Documents released under a Freedom of Information application have revealed that the Napthine-Wells Government received advice two years ago to implement presumptive legislation for firefighters’ occupational cancer because that the scientific basis of the link was sound.
Today the Age has revealed that the Napthine-Wells Government ignored that advice from the Institute for Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research that recommended the Government provide automatic access for specific cancers as occupational cancers for firefighters. The Napthine-Wells Government actively tried to prevent the advice being released publicly which was only ultimately released through an FOI process.

Members are well aware that the Napthine-Wells Government put every obstacle in the path of the Greens Bill to provide the presumption for occupational cancer and ultimately voted it down twice. Then, when the heat came on with the state election campaign the Liberal Government promised some form of assistance for firefighters with occupational cancer but without any detail or confirmation.
The release today further cements the UFU dedication to ousting the Napthine-Wells Government – Put Liberals Last!
