REMINDER: UFUA FIREFIGHTERS AND POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER CONFERENCE
The United Firefighters Union of Australia is holding a conference on Firefighting and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Melbourne on Friday 11 November 2016.
The conference will host a variety of speakers with extensive experience in PTSD and firefighting including:
- Edmonton Fire Rescue Services Fire Chief Ken Block. Edmonton has included PTSD in presumptive legislation for occupational illness for firefighters.
- President of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg and IAFF Canadian Trustee Alex Forrest
- Former Police Officer and Cross of Valor recipient Allan Sparkes
- Former ETU State Secretary Dean Mighell, Founder and Director of The Path of the Horse charity
Members are encouraged to attend the conference as it is a good opportunity to learn more about an issue which impacts on many firefighters.
A 2013 report by Newcastle University found that 68% of Victorian career firefighters exhibited symptoms of a moderate to serious level of PTSD due to the accumulated exposure to death, trauma and adrenaline charged incidents both physical and psychological stress is inherent in career firefighting and rescue duties.
