SENIOR FIREFIGHTER RUSSELL JOHNSON RETIRES
UFU Member Russell Johnson retired from the MFB last week after serving 36 years and two nights on the job.
For those of you who don’t know Russell, he is a highly decorated Senior Firefighter who received the Chiefs Commendation twice and was awarded the Valour Medal in 2009 after he and two other firefighters dragged their unconscious colleague from a burning furniture factory in Yarraville. He spent the majority of his career stationed in Western Zone at stations 42, 45 and 47.
Russell has made an outstanding contribution to the Fire Service over the course of his career and unfortunately this has not been recognised in the manner it should have.
Russell was highly respected amongst his fellow union members as giving outstanding service to the community and Union and has been a great example for new recruits.
Russell is not one to seek accolades or speak about his achievements and bravery however members should be aware that in part if it had not been for Russell’s bravery we would have indeed lost a member in the line of duty who was engulfed in flames due to an explosion.
Russell exemplifies the qualities of what is required to be a firefighter and we wish him all the best in his retirement.
In particular pass on our appreciation to his immediate and extended family for their sacrifice that many firefighters families experience. As members would be aware over 36 years of service, due to a requirement to protect the community 24/7, on many occasions Russell would have been at work and would have missed family gatherings and events.
It should be noted that Russell didn’t want a retirement or send off and once again this is an example of his modesty. However we encourage you to contact Russell and wish him all the best in his retirement.
It goes without saying he will now become part of the Retired Members Division of the United Firefighters Union of Australia, Victorian Branch through automatic progression and will be an honoured guest at the Retired Members Christmas luncheon which is sponsored by the membership each year.
