UFU AND SALVOS PARTNER FOR WORLD HOMELESS DAY

Professional firefighters cooking and serving from Salvos’ Bourke St Kitchen

We need members to attend to assist us in this important community initiative

The United Firefighters Union has been proactive in participating in important community events such as the Les Twentyman Christmas Drive, Compassionate Friends Victoria Walk to Remember and more, as our members are highly respected within the community.

This year, for World Homeless Day (10 October), the UFU has partnered with the Salvation Army to raise public awareness about the growing homelessness crisis in Melbourne CBD and Victoria.

On 10 October, professional career firefighters and UFU members will raise awareness about the homelessness crisis by assisting the Salvos at a dedicated location in Bourke St with cooking and serving meals to people experiencing homelessness.

Homelessness is an ever-increasing problem in our society and the United Firefighters Union partnering with the Salvation Army with this important event, we hope to bring awareness to the public on how serious this matter is becoming.

Each day, the Salvos reach out to over 250 community members in Melbourne and provide a meal to between 120 to 200 people at each meal time.

Organisations like the Salvos have long been reporting the increase in demand in services that they provide however the crisis is not as visible to those who don’t work in the field.

The UFU will be supporting the Salvos in making Melbournians and Victorians aware of this crisis.

The United Firefighters Union has received full support from the Chief Fire Officers of both the MFB and CFA for firefighters participating in this event to create awareness within the community.

Both agencies have also authorised off-duty UFU members to wear their station wear on the day.  The UFU thanks both Chief Officers for their full support.  However, in doing so, this event can only be successful if you volunteer your time off-duty on 10 October. We are looking for off-duty members to staff the soup kitchen between the hours of 1100 and 2100.

Delegates teleconferences will be convened with a view to gaining support from our members to volunteer their time for this event whether it be for a couple of hours or the duration of the event. Please contact Laura on 0427 734 064 or org1@ufuvic.asn.au if you can attend.
