MEDIA RE RECENT FIRES AND MAJOR WEATHER EVENTS
The Branch Committee of Management has not made public comment during the recent fires in relation to any matters other than the foreshadowed Royal Commission.
Disappointingly a media outlet has decided to create an opportunity and incite persons to ring in, purportedly claiming to be CFA volunteers, and requesting them to outline their areas of concern regarding equipment and complaints against operational professional firefighters.
First, let me state we understand that you do not seek accolades and your professionalism at all times is the priority in exercising your duties when protecting the community, we applaud you for this.
We also understand that unsubstantiated and untested allegations via talk back radio alleging all sorts of matters regarding lack of equipment, training, and division among volunteers and career staff would cause our members concern. This behavior by the radio program concerned is at the very least ill-considered as well as being extremely destructive to the efforts of firefighting and protecting the community.
We ask you not to respond despite the obvious provocation that is being generated by a commercial radio station that has a long history of vilifying career professional firefighters.
Our request is against the background whereby the fire season is nowhere near completed. The challenges ahead in relation to protecting the community, in the context of the traditional time period of the fire season, is in front of us not behind us.
These are the challenges that we need to focus on which I know you will.
It is in this context that we know you will continue to exercise your professional skills in protecting the community and saving life and property as opposed to engaging in ill-informed unsubstantiated debate.
In closing no member should make comment.
If you are contacted by a member of the media please refer such inquiries to the union secretary or the union office.
