PURCHASE OF FIREFIGHTERS CREDIT UNION BUILDING
408 BRUNSWICK ST, FITZROY
As members would be aware the Firefighters Co-operative are in discussions with the Firefighters Mutual Bank (Part of the Teachers Mutual Bank Group) regarding a possible merger.
We are pleased to announce that we are in negotiations with the Firefighters Credit Union to purchase their premises at 408 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. We are delighted that the history and tradition built up by the Firefighters Credit Union, as a financial institution specifically set up for firefighters, is able to continue through the United Firefighters Union purchasing the building and long standing history that goes along with it.
Members will recall our plans, some 10 years ago, to renovate our existing building at 410 Brunswick St at the same time the Credit Union renovated their building at 408 Brunswick St. Unfortunately, due to the extensive litigation that we found ourselves in at the time we were not in a position to carry out our planned renovations.
Given that our existing building was in need of repairs some 10 years ago, it has now reached a point of urgent attention in order to provide our staff the working conditions and surroundings that are afforded to our members.
Our vision is for our staff to move into the Credit Union building (with a few minor alterations) by mid 2021, and redevelop our existing building at 410 Brunswick St, Fitzory into a hub whereby our current members will be able to use the space for meetings or any other union work that they are conducting. In addition to this we would like to develop a space where our retired members are always welcome, feel comfortable to drop in to catch up with other members, staff, delegates etc and where they can hold their meetings and can call home.
In redeveloping the premises at 410 Brunswick St we are calling on our members to express an interest in joining the “Redevelopment Sub Committee.” This committee ideally will consist of:
- 2 Current BCOM members
- 3 Current Members (preferably 2 of which are delegates)
- 1 retired member
- 2 staff members
If you would like to join the Redevelopment Sub Committee please send your expression of interest to Trudie Webber at firstname.lastname@example.org
