REMEMBERING OUR INDUSTRIAL OFFICER GEORGIE KIMMEL

It is with great sadness that UFU BCOM and Staff notify members that UFU Industrial Officer, Georgie Kimmel, passed away at her home earlier this week.

Georgie was a fierce advocate for workers’ rights and dedicated her working life to their health and safety and to the trade union movement.  Georgie worked for Victorian Trades Hall Council as well as a number of unions including the ASU, AMWU and HACSU, before coming to the UFU as an Industrial Officer in late 2016.

During her time at the UFU Georgie participated in numerous aspects of industrial work including consultation, implementation and representation of UFU members from the MFB, CFA and ESTA.  Members who had any involvement with Georgie will recall her meticulous attention to detail, and her dedication to the job and to our members. Employer representatives who worked with Georgie have equally recognised her commitment to our members.

We understand that many members wish to recognise and honour Georgie and her work. Georgie’s funeral service and wake will be held in Geelong next Friday 2 November. We encourage those who are able, to be a part of this occasion, to honour and remember a special colleague and a strong unionist.

A formal thank-you to UFU members

Finally, your UFU Staff wish to express a heartfelt thanks to all UFU members who assisted in caring for Georgie this year.

Many UFU members and stations fundraised, very generously donated to and attended Georgie’s farewell event in April this year. We sincerely appreciate your generosity and thoughtfulness and can assure all who contributed the gratitude Georgie towards you.

Many are aware that over the past few months Georgie has needed our support more than ever as her illness progressed.  We are proud to recognise the many UFU members who generously gave of their time and care in numerous ways. The incredible generosity of our members ensured that Georgie was surrounded in her home by beautiful fresh flowers during her last weeks and days, a gift that was so important in showing Georgie the love and esteem we held for her. We thank, in particular, all platoons at Eastern Hill No.1 and professional career firefighters stationed at Bendigo FS, Ballarat City FS, Lucas FS, Corio FS, Caroline Springs FS, Dandenong FS, Hoppers Crossing FS, Mildura FS, Rowville FS, Sunbury FS, and Wodonga FS for their generous donations to Georgie. The UFU BCOM and Staff also supported Georgie in a number of ways throughout 2018, providing various forms of assistance, regularly sending fresh fruit hampers and more.

We also thank the professional career firefighters at our D07 integrated stations, in particular the crews at Geelong City FS, who supported Georgie in many ways throughout 2018.  From dog-walking to working bees to food deliveries, your selflessness and assistance was something that created a bond with Georgie that we know will live on.
