UFU CONCERN OVER MORALE AND FATIGUE LEVELS IN CFA AND MFB FIREFIGHTERS

As members are aware, there has been significant amount of concern raised by members to the Union regarding post-traumatic stress, the impact of government strategy to demonise firefighters, the failure of government to release the fire service review and of course the ongoing derogative and regressive treatment of firefighters by management.

There has also been an escalation of the time commitment by firefighters in providing coverage to the community. Further, this has been compounded by the additional hours being asked of CFA members to perform, due to the failure of the CFA to adequate recruit and train members in the past four years and the ongoing attacks on firefighters from the Andrews Government.

The UFU is extremely concerned regarding the morale of CFA and MFB firefighters and the levels of stress and fatigue that members are currently reporting to the UFU.

Award winning video dealing with Firefighter Depression

The Union has just become aware of a ground-breaking video that deals with depression and post-traumatic stress and its symptoms from a firefighter’s point of view. This can be viewed on the following link and we strongly suggest that you take the time to familiarise yourself with its contents:

In the above context, it is important that members look after each other and that no one ends up with serious injury or loss of life due to stress, fatigue and excessive hours of work. It is vitally important to ensure that you return to your family without being injured or worse.

If you or any member around you is experiencing issues, please contact your union, as your welfare is the most important matter.

The UFU office can be contacted on 9419 8811 or if the matter is urgent Peter Marshall can be contacted on 0419 127 004.
