UFU CONFERENCE ON PTSI, OCCUPATIONAL CANCER AND PRESUMPTIVE LEGISLATION
Thank you to our Canadian colleagues for an outstanding conference
Building upon previous global conferences on occupational cancer and PTSI in the fire services, over 100 UFU current and retired members today joined Edmonton Fire Chief Ken Block and Winnipeg Fire Department Captain President/IAFF Canadian Trustee Alex Forrest for the UFU conference on PTSI, occupational cancer and presumptive legislation.
The UFU is honoured and grateful for Alex and Ken travelling to Melbourne, Australia and delivering such a comprehensive and informative seminar to UFU members.
Today, Alex Forrest reaffirmed the outcomes of the many international studies into occupational cancer of career firefighters and also discussed some future studies looking to further ameliorate the occupational harms firefighters are inevitably exposed to in the course of their careers.
Alex also touched on the Australian experience and the uphill journey the UFU first set out to traverse in 2011, and continues to traverse, in obtaining presumptive legislation for all Australian career firefighters.
Ken Block provided a comprehensive presentation to members on the history and current model of physical and mental health initiatives for firefighters and fire service personnel in the Edmonton Fire Service.
In addition to stepping UFU members through the journey for presumptive legislation for occupational cancers in firefighters, Ken also explained the path taken for legislative recognition of PTSI in firefighters, fire service personnel and other emergency service workers in Alberta and other Canadian provinces.
The conference concluded with an interactive Q&A session with Alex, Ken and Branch Secretary Peter Marshall. The UFU thanks all members for their attendance today and for their questions and comments for Alex and Ken throughout the day.
