UFU MEMBER SUPPORT FOR WALKING OFF THE WAR WITHIN
As members are aware, the UFU officially supports the charitable organisation Walking Off The War Within.
Since its establishment, numerous UFU members have committed to raising awareness about the charity and its purpose and importance to fire service personnel, defence force personnel and the wider community.
Late last year, UFU member and CFA Leading Firefighter Shayne Egan undertook to run a marathon in each state and territory of Australia for the organisation. Donning a Walking Off The War Within t-shirt for each marathon, Shayne has continued the conversation to raise awareness about mental health, in particular PTSI, and the legacy left by late UFU member and CFA QFF Nathan Shanahan. Shayne has also succeeded in fundraising for the worthy organisation.
Shayne has so far run marathons in Hobart, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane and the Northern Territory outback – which you can read about at this link: https://walkoffww.com/fireys-outback-marathon-challenge/. 2 marathons remain – Perth and Melbourne.
Final marathon in Melbourne
The UFU encourages off-duty members around the Melbourne CBD area on Sunday 13 October to attend either the beginning or end of the run in a show of support for Walking Off the War Within. Melbourne Marathon Details: 7:00AM start from Batman Avenue (150m north of Rod Laver Arena) and a 2:00PM finish at MCG.
