UFU RALLY GIVES
SHAME DENIS SHAME!
While Denis Napthine and Kim Wells sipped champagne and watched the tennis, about 1500 firefighters and supporters marched behind them to Parliament this morning.
UFU Members marched through Melbourne’s city centre behind a truck with two-oversized foam Napthine and Wells caricatures watching tennis players re-enacting the despicable decision by Minister Kim Wells to opt for the Australian Open instead of attending state emergency control centre while firefighters fought raging bushfires in February 2014.
Firefighters doned “Napthine Slashes You Burn” t-shirts and chanted through the streets to public applause and support.
They were joined by a busload of residents from Morwell who wanted to demonstrate their support for firefighters who had been working hard to protect their town, and the state’s power source, in the lengthy battle of the fire in the Hazelwood mine.
The Morwell residents commended the firefighters for their dedication and service in what has been revealed as particularly unsafe firefighting conditions including exposures to carbon monoxide and contaminated water.
Labor’s Shadow Emergency Services Minister Wade Noonan and Greens Member Colleen Hartland joined UFU Secretary Peter Marshall in listing the attacks this Government has made against firies including $66 million budget cuts and the reneging of the agreement to employ an additional 342 firefighters.
The rally marked the launch of the UFU campaign 250 days out from the state election.
Thanks to all those that attended and supported the rally, with particular appreciation to the shop stewards and delegates and all those that helped with the organisation of the rally.
The UFU will not be silenced!
