TO: ALL UFU MEMBERS
Vale John Benstead
The UFU is sad to hear of the recent passing of John Benstead. In December 1972, John led the way for CFA Officers to cross over from the CFA Officers Association (a pro management association) and become a member of the UFU. As a result, John was sacked by the CFA Chairman for daring to express his democratic right to sign up with the UFU.
After 4 weeks of strong UFU industrial action in support of John and his colleagues, and with plenty of Media attention, the then Liberal Chief Secretary directed the CFA Chairman to reinstate them.
John’s actions were a great example of the saying “The workers United will never be defeated”
As a result of the dispute the UFU committee of management set-up a CFA Officers Section of the UFU and appointed John Secretary of that section.
Thank you, Comrade, for your contribution to the successes of the United Firefighters Union during your time as a Firefighter and Union Member.
Gone but never forgotten
