To ALL UFU MEMBERS

HAZELWOOD FIRE

NEW MFB DEPLOYMENT

ARRANGEMENTS TO

COMMENCE

Further to bulletins 35 and 36, the UFU can report that a new proposal in relation to concerns regarding fatigue and the ongoing deployment of MFB firefighters at Hazelwood has been agreed to.

Under the proposal, as of Thursday morning, deployments to the Hazelwood incident will be drawn from off shift personnel who will only work 1 shift in every 8 days.

Members will muster at the Training college, be deployed to Hazelwood for 1 shift and then be returned to the Training college at the completion of the shift.

Importantly, fatigue management will also occur at the return to Burnley.

These arrangements have arisen in accordance with clause 85 of the 2010 MFB UFU Operational Staff Agreement and are without prejudice or precedent to future deployments outside the Metropolitan Fire District. Applicable conditions for this deployment are 2 meal allowances and overtime rates.

We reiterate as per previous communication that the Yallourn-Hazelwood fire is of unique nature and globally it doesn’t appear that there is any learning from previous incidents that can assist as this type of mine is the only one in existence for this type of operation.

Discussions have continued with the MFB regarding all of the additional matters as outlined in UFU bulletin 035, and further information will be provided as it arises.

Furthermore, the parties have agreed to review the ongoing deployment on a daily basis.

If members have any issues at all please do not hesitate to contact the Branch Secretary irrespective of the time of day on 0419 127 004.
