Bulletin No: 046 Volume: 20 Thursday 27 February 2014
To ALL UFU MEMBERS
As members would be aware, the UFU previously disseminated a bulletin that outlined the fact that the UFU received concerns from members regarding their health and safety at the Yallourn-Hazelwood incident/fire.
Subsequent to having received those concerns, the UFU has been in constant dialogue with the Fire Services Commissioner and both fire services to ensure our members health and safety is paramount in the firefighting operations.
As a result of those discussions a number of initiatives have been put in place inclusive of the fire services requesting testing from the EPA for potential contaminants, of which the UFU has now received initial results.
Irrespective, to ensure our members health and safety, the UFU has engaged at its own cost an independent company to undertake wide-range testing for potential contaminants.
The results of which will be forwarded to members once the UFU has received such information. However, we want to reaffirm that the UFU is doing this on a precautionary basis and do not want to cause undue alarm amongst our membership base.
Additionally we have requested the fire service make available peer support counselling services and we encourage people to utilise such if they are feeling anxious.
Finally, if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the Branch Secretary Peter Marshall on 0419 127 004.
