Bulletin No: 043 Volume: 20 Tuesday 25 February 2014
To ALL UFU MEMBERS
A number of members have, this morning, brought an urgent health and safety matter to the UFU’s attention regarding being placed in a position of danger at Yallourn/Hazelwood.
Most importantly, this is against the direction and instruction from the Health and Safety Officer which is not only a breach of occupational law but is reckless in nature to the health and safety of employees deployed to Hazelwood.
Despite written assurances and cooperation from the UFU due to the complexity and difficult nature of this fire, this latest breach is intolerable and we have organised an immediate conference with the fireservices. Additionally the UFU has requested the Brigade Medical Officer to undertake testing of the personnel concerned.
Future deployment arrangements are being considered by your Branch Committee of Management. A further bulletin will follow.
In the interim, if any member is requested to undertake a task they believe will jeopardise their health and/or safety they are not to do so and they have a legal right to refuse the performance of duty irrespective of being ordered or otherwise in this context.
If any member has any concerns please contact Peter Marshall directly on 0419 127 004.
Please note Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley is in support of the information contained in this bulletin.
